A story of adoption and a demonstration of Christian values, THE BOOK THIEF is a compelling movie that shows what love looks like in the midst of extraordinary hardship. Yet, wherever our young heroine goes, she blazes a trail transforming the lives of countless people. Her mother’s communist leanings in Nazi Germany brings her to the foster care system on the eve of World War II. Set in National Socialist Germany, this is a small story that tugs at the heart. More Detail:īased on the New York Times best seller, THE BOOK THIEF is a wonderful work that follows the story of one young girl and her search for home, family and belonging. (CC, BB, CoCo, HH, Ab, Pa, VV, M) Strong Christian, moral worldview includes elements of love and self-sacrifice, funeral scene with a priest praying, one quick prayer from girl’s adoptive father, and narrated by the voice of Death, who gives a vaguely biblical reference at the end, plus elements of love marred by stealing as a major plot device, pro-Communism, pro-humanism, racism, and propaganda claiming a difference between one form of socialism and another some swearing in German that is not translated violence includes adoptive mother disciplines a little girl, National Socialist thugs bash windows of Jewish shop owners, men and women kicked and brutalized by soldiers, girl beats up boy, boy beats another boy, two boys die, brutality, air raid bombs explode, and dead bodies recovered afterward kissing and hugging partial upper male nudity when boy takes a bath no alcohol no smoking or drug use and, the vicissitudes of war, including falsified documents and scrounging for possessions. Rated PG-13 for brutality, war themes, propaganda, and violence, THE BOOK THIEF requires caution for some serious subjects and some propagandistic elements. THE BOOK THIEF tells a positive Christian, moral tale of adoption and self-sacrifice. The performances are delightful and heartwarming, despite the difficult circumstances. “I am haunted by humans,” the Angel of Death confesses.īased on the New York Times best seller, THE BOOK THIEF is wonderfully directed by Brian Percival of DOWNTON ABBEY. The Angel says he’s usually not concerned with the lives of humans, but the story of 11-year-old Liesel attracts him. Narrating the story is the voice of the Angel of Death. The wealthy burgomeister’s wife lets Liesel use her dead son’s exquisite library. Liesel befriends max, a Jewish man hiding from the Gestapo. After the tragic death of her younger brother, Liesel is taken in by two foster parents and befriended by a little boy named Rudy. THE BOOK THIEF, set against the backdrop of Nazi Germany, follows 11-year-old Liesel’s search for home, family and belonging amid incredibly difficult circumstances.

A background in tech journalism is a huge plus. We are looking for a staff writer who is driven, self-motivated, and able to take the initiative to produce timely, well-reported stories. This staff writer will cover topics like:Ī) Journalism’s incorporation of generative AI into news production and distribution: Automated news writing, automation of newsroom tasks, recommendations, personalized news, and artī) Publishers’ decisions about and experiments with how to use the technology emerging best practicesĬ) Generative AI’s effects on search traffic and digital business modelsĭ) Generative AI’s many problems (racial bias and gender bias, the creation of misinformation) and their consequences for journalism. We’ll set the standard for smart, authoritative, and appropriately skeptical coverage of the ways that generative AI affects our industry, for better and worse. We are already experimenting with generative AI to create art for our stories, and readers are asking us questions about the topic. This position revolves around a specific beat: “Generative AI meets journalism.” Nieman Lab has been appropriately wary of technologies hailed as game-changers for journalism (cryptocurrency/blockchain, micropayments, many video efforts, earlier iterations of AI), but we believe that generative AI - defined as algorithms like DALL-E and ChatGPT that can create new content like text, photos, and video - has the potential to change the news industry as much as the iPhone did more than a decade ago. They only offered to extend for one hour from 11 am to 12 pm. Since we had a late flight on the last day, we inquired about a possible late checkout. Looks like even B&Bs have jumped on the whole “resort fee” game. Note: there is an “Amenity Fee” of $35 per night that includes breakfast for 2, wine reception/hors d’oeuvres, deserts, Wi-Fi, and refreshments in the parlor. This is why one should always check on prices, as you never know if they drop! To our surprise, rates dropped right before our arrival, so we called to see if we could move to a larger king room and the hotel was more than willing enough to upgrade us to the Garden Courtyard King. We booked a room with a queen bed overlooking the gardens. We booked a non-refundable rate that came out to be around $260 a night including taxes and the amenity fee. Pros: Very cute setting, convenient location, and food throughout the dayĬons: Furnishings need a revamp and service could be more personal Booking + Rate: The hotel is adults-only and offers 25 rooms in various configurations. Built in 1847, the Eliza Thompson is the oldest inn in the Historic Inns of Savannah Collection. Each is unique and original, and all were built in the mid to late 1800s. The Eliza Thompson House is part of the Historic Inns of Savannah, which is a collection of boutique hotels and B&Bs in the Historic District of the city. Perhaps I would prefer to return in the spring or fall. Savannah is a very cute city, but very hot + humid in the summer. My friend that I was traveling with had stayed here before and had a good experience, so I trusted their judgment. After one night at the Andaz Savannah, I checked into the Eliza Thompson House for a two-night stay. I haven’t really stayed at one before, so I was excited to try one out. By the second evening, he was singing the praises of the property and thanking me for insisting on the Eliza Thompson house. On my first trip to Savannah, Georgia, I wanted to get a taste of a bed and breakfast. When we arrived, my husband was quite the grouch because they do not accept pets and it wasn't one of his chain hotels where he can use his business points. Finally, it rained every day we were there, and the hotel had umbrellas for us. We didn't make it to either of those, but there's a great supply of cold water in the lobby, too. They also have hors-d'oeuvres and wine at Happy Hour along with port and dessert in the later evening. The breakfast, which is included, is incredible different every day. The staff is fantastic, very good at recommending restaurants. The bed was very comfortable, the AC got plenty cool (important for July in Savannah), and the bathroom was small but clean and plenty new. Our room (king over looking the courtyard) was small but good. If you want the touristy activities, they are within walking distance but far enough away that you can avoid then altogether. The Telfair and Jepson are within walking distance as well as quite a few of the historic homes. VERY close to excellent restaurants, cocktail lounges, and local shops. Ralph joined the Army, at which time Esther got a job in the city. At that time Esther was dating her future husband, Ralph Lomerson, who lived in Lebanon Township. The Great Depression coincided with the family's move and hit the family hard. Another sister, Renee, came along a few years later, at which time Esther's family moved towards the city to acquire a butcher shop. Another brother came soon after that and he was given the name of Henry because Esther's parents couldn't make it to the hospital in time and he was born in the back seat of a Ford car they owned. A brother was born after Esther and was given the family name of Theodore. They weren't disappointed with Esther, but she was given the middle name of Theodora.
